Redirects

A redirect sends a visitor who opens an old address to the new one. Redirects lists them all.

The ones the CMS adds for you

When you change the Web address of a published page, post, notice, event or place, the CMS adds a permanent redirect from the old address to the new one. Links people saved, and search engines, keep working.

Adding one by hand

Add a redirect by hand for an address from your previous website, or any address you are moving.

  1. Under From (old address), type the old address, such as /old-page. A full address you paste is trimmed to its path.
  2. Under To (new address or URL), type where it goes: an address on this site, such as /new-page, or another website's address starting with https://.
  3. Pick the Type:
    • Permanent (301) tells search engines the move is final.
    • Temporary (302) suits a forward you expect to remove.
  4. Press Add redirect.

Adding a From that is already listed updates its row.

A redirect can match an address with a particular query, such as /news?id=12, for links from an older system. The site ignores the tracking codes email and social campaigns add. One row covers every campaign's link.

How redirects behave

  • A published page at the same address comes first. Its redirect starts working again once that page moves away.
  • An address matches with or without its final slash.
  • The home page, /, stays where it is.

Removing a redirect

Press and hold the bin on its row for two seconds. The old address stops forwarding within a minute.

Who does what

Everyone signed in sees the list. Only administrators add or remove redirects.
